Hi everyone sorry for the delay. Free letter because it’s late.
NEWS:
- formally introduced Magasin’s new menswear columnist, Louis Cheslaw. My perfect friend.
- is quickly becoming one of my favorite newsletters. They launched Miami and SF extensions of their letter. It’s cool to see how all these people are building out their Substacks into media companies.
"Roughly 170 million Americans use TikTok. That’s half the population of the United States." An awesome, albeit slow-loading, special-edition story from The Times about how TikTok has changed America.
Netflix news:
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos earned a bit less in 2023 than the year before, but he still had a pay package worth $49.8 million.
The streaming company’s shares slid after stellar first-quarter results following management’s decision to stop reporting quarterly subscriber data. The past year has been a strong year for Netflix overall in both revenue and subscribers. This boom for the streaming service is likely due to the password sharing crackdown that started in early 2023.
The chore coat invasion in our restaurants is verrryyyy Silver Lake circa 2017 to me.
Imagine moving into an apartment building that requires residents to get an energetic cleansing ceremony. (For both their home and their bodies). We live in the age of the "wellness everywhere" consumer – people want wellness at work, when they travel, and now in their apartment buildings. I don’t hate the idea of living in a building with other energetically balanced people. The Well, a wellness-focused membership club and hotel that has locations in New York, Connecticut, Costa Rica and Cabo, built an apartment building in Florida who want to live The Well life every day. Units include built-in aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage showers, skincare refrigerators, movable therapeutic LED panels and in-home gardening services.
Cops came to the BODE x Nike drop today to control the crowd. People were getting aggressive and cutting the line. I got a direct report from a friend who was on the line (which ran from Hester to Canal) for the sneakers. When I asked how the security guards knew who was a reseller, he said they were “dressed like resellers.” He got the shoes, folks.
SKIMS launched an app. Smart, those push notifications are so effective. But there is also the chapter in the Glossier book where they launched an app and nobody knew why…
People are very excited about Salt and Straw coming to New York. As someone who eats a pint of Haagen Dazs every three days, I’m not that excited about this. What I did find interesting is that Danny Meyer invested in Salt and Straw and his daughter Haillie also has a pretty awesome ice cream business called Caffè Panna. So I guess Danny really believes in the business of ice cream.
During the Olympics, NBCUniversal plans to deploy five heart-rate monitors among the parents of athletes. The results will be shown on screen as moms and dads watch their kids compete — something that test audiences have loved.
See you Monday.
Feed me readers, can someone help point me to a campaign that (I think?) Emily talked about recently that drew from that 90s shopping catalog aesthetic? e.g. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/527061962656808461/
I know a few brands have done it recently but for some reason I can't seem to find any of them right now
Two things:
1. Knowing the insanity of sneaker drops in the 2010s, it's hilarious to see people floored by this with the Astrograbber drop.
2. Salt & Straw is delicious. The UWS launch is LITERALLY across the street from a Daily Provisions!
